Southern food. Indulging on our last supper in Portland.

Our last supper in Portland was at the Screen Door, known for its incredible Southern cuisine. Fried okra, hushpuppies, fried chicken and pulled pork sandwiches. It’s feel-good food, where you feel good eating it and absolutely miserable while it sits in your stomach. Totally worth it though.

We then jumped to the H.P. Lovecraft bar. They had a metal show going on, and it was pretty good. Good beer selection and cocktails, and they really put emphasis on making the decor as goth as possible. We were surprised to see a lot of normal couples in their mid-30s in there. A dark, but welcoming atmosphere.

Then we retired for the night, woke up early in the morning, and got on our planes back to Omaha. Took a few pictures of the safety manual.

Our morning started at the Waffle Window, one of the best waffle houses in the whole goddamn city. Ice cream, chocolate, peanut butter, all on top of waffles. Their hot chocolate is also great.

After a mishap with bad bus directions, we finally reached the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. Great place. Had a nice exhibit that showed how people interact with technology and how we use it to improve ourselves. And then the fire alarm went off. At that point, we were so tired that we started to head home.

But not before we looked at this awesome solar array. It had outlets as well as parking spots for electric cars to charge up. So fucking cool.

We also saw these large glass buildings near the convention center downtown. They look Prothean, so when the Reapers finally invade, I know where I’ll be going.

When we got back to the hotel, we decided to lie down. We were both exhausted. And then I woke up and looked at the clock. We slept for 5 hours. It was 10pm. I believe Rachel’s exact response was “…Are you fucking kidding me?!”

So now we’re in a bind on where to eat. Nothing the Internet can’t solve. We find this late night food truck area in the Hawthorne region. Very delicious food there. After a hearty meal of pork, fries and crepes, we then headed back to sleep.

We walked around downtown before it was lunch time. We went to the food truck block and grabbed a quick bite. I had some Korean barbeque while Rachel had some Indian food. Excellent stuff. Excellent food truck stuff.

We then walked around for a little bit and found a few gems. The Scientology building was incredibly well kept. It looked more like a business showroom than it did a fucking church. Can’t really put much merit into an institution where the creator said “I was broke, so I started a religion.”

We also found one of the only running adult theaters in the country. The hentai poster just outside of it made it that much more of a giggle thing.

And then there was a park. Out of thousands of parks. THIS WHOLE FUCKING STATE IS GREEN.

The decor and layout was awesome. Very modern.

In 90s video game fashion, we delivered justice to criminals with our fists and a loose sense of morals.

Treat your late night hunger with the best donut place in town.

At Voodoo Donut, we got an actual voodoo donut and a Triple Chocolate Penetration. Yes, those are Cocoa Puffs.

This is the arcade I was talking about. Ground Kontrol is this large arcade/bar venue, loaded with a bunch of classic and modern titles as well as a great beer selection. We went in with the intention of getting $10 in quarters and playing a few rounds while drinking. We lucked out and went there during a free play night, which was $5 a person and you could play all the games for as long as you wanted. We were there for 3 hours.

After that, we headed to Voodoo Donut, one of the more well known donut places in the country. It’s known for it’s very tasty and unique selection of donuts. We grabbed a few and instantly fell in love with the place. The voodoo donut was yummy, but I really enjoyed the Triple Chocolate Penetration. A chocolate cake donut with chocolate frosting and Cocoa Puffs on top. Divine.

Jumped in this comic shop to look around. It's a nice place.

I’ve only experienced using a city rail system once before Portland, and that was in Chicago for a conference Rachel was attending. This rail makes me want to pay higher taxes and put one in Omaha, because goddamnit they’re fucking useful. Because of the rail, we did very little driving.

We stopped by Old Town Pizza Company after checking into the hotel. The pizza was great, but the decor was even cooler. Legend has it that it’s haunted. Something about being haunted by those who were taken for slavery. I didn’t see any ghosts, so maybe next time.

We then started to walk around the downtown Portland area. Saw a few nice landmarks, went into a comic shop, and then spent the rest of our evening in this bitchin’ arcade.

The rose garden was superb, but I longed for downtown Portland...

The rose garden was superb, but I longed for downtown Portland culture. I longed for…Powell’s City of Books.

Biggest used bookstore in the country. And they weren’t lying. This fucker probably has more square footage than my old high school.

After finding some gems to buy and eating a little bit, we ventured to the hotel. Nice place. King sized bed, decent 4G reception, and close to one of my favorite parts of the trip: The Portland Light Rail.

The Rose Garden in Portland has a lot of roses.

Seriously, it's like they only grow roses at the Rose Garden.

Oh hey, the clams are done.

While the clams began to clean themselves out, we set off to hike up a mountain. Unfortunately, Google Maps told us that the “right” trail was a mile farther than the actual trail. So, we hiked up a very difficult logging trail instead. Still, I thought it was very invigorating. I felt like I could climb that mountain all day. Good pictures too.

After that, we returned to the fishery to find our clams done. We didn’t get a lot of meat off of them because we didn’t allow the clams to essentially shit out all of the sand and garbage they ate, but even so, good stuff.

We took the rest of the clams with us back to the bed & breakfast. I had the idea of making smores over a fire on the beach, since it’s not illegal to do in Oregon. Unfortunately, while trying to start and maintain the fire, it started to rain. Still, it kicked ass to have a fire started while watching the roaring Pacific.

The best part of the bed & breakfast: Walking distance from the beach.

After the crabbing, we traveled to the Zen Garden Bed & Breakfast near Manzanita. It’s run by this lovely old British lady, and it’s very well kept. As seen from the pictures above, the best part is walking distance to the ocean. I still find it incredibly intimidating. So vast, looking endless. You gain a greater appreciation for infinity.

Other great perks of the Zen Garden is a steady supply of tea, home-cooked breakfasts every morning, and an outside bath house that you would probably fall asleep in.
